Medicaid Cheat Sheet

Updated: Jul 27, 2025

Medicaid is a free or low-cost health coverage program for people with limited income, disabilities, seniors, pregnant women, and children. It’s a federal and state program, which means every state runs its Medicaid a little differently — but the goal is the same: to make sure everyone has access to healthcare.

🧾 Who Typically Qualifies for Medicaid?

Eligibility varies by state, but you may qualify if you are:

  • An individual or family with low income

  • A pregnant person

  • A child under 19

  • A parent or caregiver

  • An individual with a disability

  • 65 or older

  • A foster youth (even up to age 26 in some states)

💡 TIP: Many states expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), meaning more adults can qualify based on income alone.

💸 Income Guidelines (General Example)

Each state has different income limits, but here’s a general example based on 2024 federal poverty level (FPL):

Household Size

Monthly Income Limit (Approx.)

1

$1,677

2

$2,268

3

$2,859

4

$3,450

🕓 How Long Does It Take to Get Approved?

  • Processing can take 15 to 45 days, depending on the state and your documentation.

  • In emergency situations, some states offer temporary (presumptive) Medicaid so you can receive care while your full application is pending.

🛑 What If I Don’t Qualify?

If your income is slightly over the limit, or you’re in a state that hasn’t expanded Medicaid, don’t give up! You might still qualify for:

  • A Marketplace plan with subsidies

  • Community Health Centers with sliding scale fees

  • State-specific medical assistance programs

🚨 Medicaid Redetermination (Important!)

Every year (or sometimes more often), you must recertify your eligibility for Medicaid. If you moved, changed jobs, or missed a notice, you might get dropped!

📝 Tips to stay covered:

  • Keep your contact info up to date

  • Respond to renewal letters on time

  • Ask for help if you get denied — you may be able to appeal
